Don’t you love reading a book where the FMC isn’t 16, but 40?

Of course, no shade against a younger FMC, but as I grow older, I find myself drawn to women who have some parts of life figured out and others still beautifully undone. Women who are finding themselves again at an age society likes to label scandalous.

Vera Stein is a 40-year-old woman finally breaking the destructive patterns she formed in her youth and rediscovering herself, and that’s refreshing. She has spent most of her life living for others, and now she has decided to do something for herself. The leads and side characters are well balanced, and none of them overpower the others. I didn’t like the third-act fight very much, but the ending was good, so no complaints.
